If yo'u're in melee, spirit shroud is better, since it's higher damage, gives some soft cc and, which is often overlooked, it cuts any healingthe enemy can receive which can come in handy if an enemy has the ability to regenerate or they have healing spell casters on their side.įor ranged Hex is better due to its range. Alternatively, it gives you valuable versatility you otherwise wouldn't have. Spell choice generally depends on what you do most and whether it enhances that. Even then, I generally swap it out quickly. If I do take it as a melee Warlock, usually I pre-cast it using my handy portable ant farm (token), short rest before heading out for the day, and then use it until there's something else I want to do. Even then, you generally just have better stuff to be concentrating on. Hex is generally better for a Blastlock or ranged build. It is also nice when you want to capitalize on any crit damage you might do, or want to bottleneck enemies or impede them from hitting the backline. Otherwise? Spirit Shroud gives you a variety of damage types that can be very nice as a melee Warlock, as we do lean towards weapon and necrotic damage types. Darkness/Moil might not feel as cool as a spell that improves damage, but it probably gives you better damage overall. Those spells also offer some well appreciated defense. If you're running GWM, then it probably will be Darkness/Moil, to reduce the -5 penalty to accuracy. The fact that you managed to do 6d6 extra damage against random minions throughout the day is pretty negligible compared to the bonus 6d8 damage you pumped into a priority target during a particular difficult fight.Īs a melee character, you have to decide what is more important. No concentration spells (including Silent Image), no readied spells, no rituals, no spells with cast times longer than an action.Īnd even if you can carry it through many combats to extract its full value, not all damage is equal. Not only is that more difficult for a melee warlock (maintaining concentration), it heavily restricts your utility by locking you out of concentration for the day. It doesn't eat your concentration between combats.įor Hex to come out on top, you need to be carrying it through many combats, and ideally short rests. You don't need to use your bonus action to swap targets, leaving it free for additional attacks or spells.I prefer Spirit Shroud for a melee warlock.
